A wheated expression, the Horse Soldier Straight Bourbon Whiskey starts as a mash bill consisting of 70% yellow dent corn, 20% wheat, and 10% barley. After distillation, the bourbon spends a total of 8 years in new, charred American oak casks to develop its distinctive flavor before finally being bottled at a hearty 95 proof – the same as the Special Forces Team Number of the soldiers that inspired it.
On the nose, the bourbon yields the aromas of sweet corn, musty oak, leather, sugar cookie, and a generous helping of vanilla cream. This is complemented by an oak-driven palate accented by notes of white pepper, vanilla caramel, oxtail candy, corked wine, and cookie dough, all wrapped up by a moderately long and spicy finish of sweet corn, vanilla, and nutmeg.
